2012 .....The New Y2K?

I find it hard to believe it has been 10 years , since all the hysteria over the year changing to 2000. Remember we were all supposed to either die at midnight or the world would be thrown into darkness and all power , bank accounts, and anything else connected to a computer would be lost.
Thankfully MySpace Twitter, and FaceBook were not yet created or there would have been mass panic had we lost any status updates.

Now we have the new Y2K, which is 2012. As we all know the calendar we all live by runs out at 2012 and thus many doomsayers are saying the world will obviously end then also. The phrase "get a life" suddenly comes to mind :)

If even the Son of God does not know the date of His return, I don't believe a group of ancient guys building a calendar know. They probably just got tired LOL

Anyway , it is a new year and such a busy year this will be for me.
The main theme I see is how many trips I will be making to South East Asia, particularly the Pacific Rim area. I will leave in about 10 days for the Philippines. This will be a trip of both business and pleasure. Interestingly , both could have major impacts on my future.

If you have any interest at all in the outcome , many of the details will be posted here.
More musings soon........................

Still Breathing

I know it has been awhile , since anything was posted here. I've mostly been placing my thoughts into my journal. I plan to use this blog more in 2010 . I have so many things going on in my life presently and so many things have happened between the last post and now that I could never catch you up......so I will just pick up with my life already in progress with the next blog. :-)

36 Hours

WOW!! Thirty Six hours and I will be leaving with four others on a trekking adventure through South East Asia. So many months of preparation, and now it's here. I plan to write more about pre-trip feelings if time permits before we leave.

I don't believe in it

Yesterday, I passed by one of my customers and he asked me how was my Christmas. I responded simply that it went well, then I asked how was his. His response totally stunned me. He shook his head and replied, "I don't believe in it."

We were very shorthanded at work and I was in a huge hurry, so I let the comment go and didn't press it. If you know me, then you already know my mind didn't let that statement go.

I've looked at it from different angles trying to figure out just WHAT he didn't believe in. Maybe it was commercialized Christmas, Christ birth, Santa, or the entire concept of the holiday season.
This guy is a veteran of the Korean Conflict (I hate that term it was a WAR), and lives alone with his dog. I'm thinking maybe, like many single people , that he was just not feeling very merry without family to celebrate with.

I have thought much about that statement over the past 36 hours or so.
I'm going to have to investigate this just to see what could cause such a statement.

End of Year

I am so amazed that this year is almost over. It seems time goes more quickly with each passing day. I went to bed last night and I was 23, I woke up this morning and I'm 43! You know very well what I am saying, it is just tough to figure out where so many years have gone.
I've been living in TN for almost 7 years, and that's after working on a transfer for 2 years prior to that...seems like only a few months that MEChel and I were driving across Texas and talking about moving to Nashville. No way it seems like almost 10 years ago!

I must say out of all the people from our escapades that moved to NashVegas only a small handful of us have remained. I will blog later about the reasons I know I was called to Brentwood.

I have been dealing with those feelings of standing at a crossroads and having no idea where the next step is to land. I only know I MUST take a step, I just can not discern which direction to step. I feel like I'm just standing still, wondering why I didn't change the batteries in the GPS ;-)

I know the two directions I want to go, however it seems totally impossible that the two could ever coexist , so that is why I am so confused. I have spent the better part of the past year working through an application process for a career change, and yet it does not seem the exact fit...very close, yet I have that gut feeling that says not quite right.

Yes, I am rambling. I have so much to process and so little time to get things in order.
I look at some of my friends and it seems they have such a clear picture of where they are going....and are actually taking the steps to get there. I feel more like I was on the right road when suddenly I breached a hill and was blinded by the setting sun and am waiting for my eyes to readjust before I hit an oncoming truck!

So frustrating not knowing what is next.
I only know changes are in store for 2009.
The year of change, and I'm not talking about politics either ;-)

The next few days will find me revisiting my goals , evaluating how well I did working toward them, and then realign some priorities, and setting new or tweaking old goals.

2009, year of clear direction and accomplishment!

Lessons from a man with no home

Today we ran into some "minor details" as my brother-in-law would refer to them. Some things we attempted to build or assemble just would not go together correctly or line up properly. I was working with Steve , and two of our friends from the shelter upstairs . We were assembling book cases for the Life Skill Educators offices. The very first one gave us a tough time. We finished the assembling and noticed it was not even close to being straight, it made the leaning tower of Pisa look perfectly straight. We checked everything , and Steve made a few adjustments, yet still it would not square up. He decided to go get one of the professional skilled guys; ie Bill or Shane and see what the problem was. This left me alone with our two helpers. As many of you know I constantly use humor in everything I do. The catch phrase had become "it's not square", so I decided to break the ice by using that as a joke. One example was when I put the carpenter's square beside one of the guys' head and stated "it's not square"! He got a big kick out of that. We decided to get creative, so me and my new friends , Leslie and Kevin made a sundial of sorts out of the square. We checked different light sources in the room and concluded that only the sun could give us the correct time.

Did you see it??? There is an unintended analogy there. So, many times we look for artifical sources to guide us and we can only get the correct guidance from the son. Hmmmmm , interesting that the answer is so simple, yet we never see it until we exhaust all other possibilities.

You make me laugh LONG time

It's official the team bonding has begun as have the pranks. Last night we had the do-rag club and tonight Bedi and The Tube Sock Gang. Bill had to show the girls his tube sock head band, made from a tube sock tied to his head. Whitni, Jackie, Meredith, and Ellie all jloined Bill's gang. It was hilarious as they took photos.

Earlier Ben and Paige decided to "short sheet" the beds of Shane and Ken. I'm just wondering what is going to be happening to mine.

Shane has been the clown thus far, however I can only think now everyone is ganging up on him.
After all the seriousness during the day it's cool to unwind at the team house with all the craziness.

I am typing this as we are all hanging out downstairs. It's almost midnight and we are enjoy really getting silly at this point. I'm counting down until someone that is actually sleeping comes downstairs to shut us up.

Good Morning Sunshine

We awoke this morning to beautiful sunshine, no wind, and much warmer temperatures. We were thrilled!! Everyone was much more relaxed , knowing more of what to expect from our day. The best part of the morning , HOT showers!! WoooHoooooo!!!! This was the first day some of the team members had the joy of having hot water for their showers. Finally, the hot water issue seemed to be resolved.

I have no reports yet from the other teams, so I'll share about our time today at Living Grace, located at Muizenberg. We entered the shelter this morning just as Peter was preparing to begin the morning devotion for the homeless that had stopped by the shelter. After a brief opening devotional story, the men and women were able to pick out their favorite worship songs and hymns to sing. I realized that every song we sang dealt with second chances, over coming difficult times, or just being loved for who you are.

The first song we sang was "Amazing Grace" . Peter stopped us at the second verse and commented he always read this first, due to the importance of the message of the words.
"Through many dangers toils and snares , I have already come.
Twas grace that brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home".
As we sang the final verse, I thought about how the previous verse so aptly fit the lives of the homeless we were sitting with. I thought about the dangers and fears they face each day, especially at night when they are sleeping on the streets. We have been told , that sadly, they are safer on the street than in some of the night shelters. A lady lead in a devotional about God is all about relationship and that our relationship with Him is what makes the difference in our lives each day. The main thought from the opening and closing statements was that if today was not a GREAT Tuesday, it was because we chose for it not to be great.

Two other things stood out to me as well this afternoon. As we were working on the renovations of the kitchen, the staff would stop by to look in on our progress. They would get all giddy and laugh as they looked and would comment on how great things looked. Ironically these comments were made as we were just beginning to put cabinets and pantries together. We told them we had not done anything yet, and they would laugh and say "Oh but it will be friendly when you are finished" (You must say that with a South African accent, which sounds very much like a British accent). That makes you remember just why you are working on these projects and just how much people appreciate acts of love and kindness.

The other thing that really struck me was the cold hard facts of what the homeless face. Many of these men and women stop by looking for day work. Most are there for food and shelter for the days. They are allowed to leave their belongings in a locker. I looked at a few of these and noticed how little was there. All the possessions of these individuals were in a tiny locker and yet we constantly complain about not having enough closet or storage space. Then as we were wrapping up work for the day, a gentleman came in looking for food. There was no more soup left, although he spotted a pot of something close to the stove. I looked a little closer at the scene and overheard the lady holding the pot say that was food for the dog. It was scraps and everything left over from the day. The guy indicated he didn't care and would eat it anyway. She said no she could not, that it might harm him. She did however find him some bread, so he would have something to eat.

How many times do we complain about our food? We talk about the bad taste or the fact it is not prepared just right. Here was a man willing to eat what was basically dog food, he only wanted food....no matter what it was , tasted , or smelled like.

The humbling fact is that many of us are just one paycheck, or lenghty sickness away from being in the same state as this guy. Did anyone else think of the scripture ".....for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink......" This was a true example of when Jesus said, "whatever you do for the least of these, you do for me".

Haven't I Seen You Before?

Today was De' Ja Vous. When we went to Table Mountain today we spotted several people we had seen on our flight over here. Later when we went to Water Front, we spotted the same four people again. They were part of the Miami team. They are here for working with VBS at a church near where we are working.

We had an interesting conversation with two of the guys. They really are excited about their work. It was very interesting that the two places we would choose to visit today were the exact same locations Team Miami were at also and at the exact same time.

I'm interested to see what will come out of us and this team when we meet up again. It's kinda cool to be seeing familar faces.

Beautiful View

I'm fortunate enough to be in the room with the ocean view, cool. Speaking of cool, did I mention there is no heat ?? Actually, we have a small space heater in our room and it did an ok job. The weather should be rather nice , highs in 50's-60's. I did hear there was no hot water this morning though. I took my shower last night...smart move LOL

It's Friday morning and almost time for breakfast, then we will split into several sub-teams and look at our projects ans objectives for the week.....then we will play tourist in the afternoon. Looks as if we get all the "fun" things out of the way first.

I'm adding a photo of the view from my room as soon as I get a free moment, just so you know how we are roughing it HAHAHAHAHA

Live From Cape Town

Well, we are here. Flights went well, except for the HORRIBLE food!!! Delta Airlines has the worse food ever. I set with Shane on the way across the pond and we helped the pilot fly through some rough weather. Ok, so we were using our U-Shaped pillows as controls, however we were doing almost as well as the pilot !!!

We had a short meeting after we arrived, went through unpacking supplies, and had dinner. I met a girl from Michigan named Brenda at dinner. She is working with Living Hope doing fund raising for US organizations. Very interesting conversation.

We also had a devotion after we ate. Things have been busy already, so we are definitely getting tired.

More to come later......

It's Almost Time

Sunday evening we met as a team to finish packing supplies for our trip on Thursday. John Thomas, director and founder of Living Hope, stopped by to brief us on some political changes that had taken place earlier in the day in South Africa. He also informed us to dress and pack warm, saying this has been the coldest winter on record in Cape Town. So much for Global Warming LOL

I think the high when we arrive on Friday is supposed to be a balmy 50, oh did I mention that homes have no heat there? YIKES!!!

I'll be updating on the trip as often as time permits. I have a few meetings I have to squeeze in between our regular duties, however I will make updates. Hopefully, I will have time to add a few photos as well.

We depart Thursday morning around 11:20am and arrive at 3:55pm Friday in Cape Town. They are seven hours ahead of us. I can't wait for that long flight WoooHooooo yeah riiiiight!!!
