You make me laugh LONG time

It's official the team bonding has begun as have the pranks. Last night we had the do-rag club and tonight Bedi and The Tube Sock Gang. Bill had to show the girls his tube sock head band, made from a tube sock tied to his head. Whitni, Jackie, Meredith, and Ellie all jloined Bill's gang. It was hilarious as they took photos.

Earlier Ben and Paige decided to "short sheet" the beds of Shane and Ken. I'm just wondering what is going to be happening to mine.

Shane has been the clown thus far, however I can only think now everyone is ganging up on him.
After all the seriousness during the day it's cool to unwind at the team house with all the craziness.

I am typing this as we are all hanging out downstairs. It's almost midnight and we are enjoy really getting silly at this point. I'm counting down until someone that is actually sleeping comes downstairs to shut us up.

Good Morning Sunshine

We awoke this morning to beautiful sunshine, no wind, and much warmer temperatures. We were thrilled!! Everyone was much more relaxed , knowing more of what to expect from our day. The best part of the morning , HOT showers!! WoooHoooooo!!!! This was the first day some of the team members had the joy of having hot water for their showers. Finally, the hot water issue seemed to be resolved.

I have no reports yet from the other teams, so I'll share about our time today at Living Grace, located at Muizenberg. We entered the shelter this morning just as Peter was preparing to begin the morning devotion for the homeless that had stopped by the shelter. After a brief opening devotional story, the men and women were able to pick out their favorite worship songs and hymns to sing. I realized that every song we sang dealt with second chances, over coming difficult times, or just being loved for who you are.

The first song we sang was "Amazing Grace" . Peter stopped us at the second verse and commented he always read this first, due to the importance of the message of the words.
"Through many dangers toils and snares , I have already come.
Twas grace that brought me safe thus far and grace will lead me home".
As we sang the final verse, I thought about how the previous verse so aptly fit the lives of the homeless we were sitting with. I thought about the dangers and fears they face each day, especially at night when they are sleeping on the streets. We have been told , that sadly, they are safer on the street than in some of the night shelters. A lady lead in a devotional about God is all about relationship and that our relationship with Him is what makes the difference in our lives each day. The main thought from the opening and closing statements was that if today was not a GREAT Tuesday, it was because we chose for it not to be great.

Two other things stood out to me as well this afternoon. As we were working on the renovations of the kitchen, the staff would stop by to look in on our progress. They would get all giddy and laugh as they looked and would comment on how great things looked. Ironically these comments were made as we were just beginning to put cabinets and pantries together. We told them we had not done anything yet, and they would laugh and say "Oh but it will be friendly when you are finished" (You must say that with a South African accent, which sounds very much like a British accent). That makes you remember just why you are working on these projects and just how much people appreciate acts of love and kindness.

The other thing that really struck me was the cold hard facts of what the homeless face. Many of these men and women stop by looking for day work. Most are there for food and shelter for the days. They are allowed to leave their belongings in a locker. I looked at a few of these and noticed how little was there. All the possessions of these individuals were in a tiny locker and yet we constantly complain about not having enough closet or storage space. Then as we were wrapping up work for the day, a gentleman came in looking for food. There was no more soup left, although he spotted a pot of something close to the stove. I looked a little closer at the scene and overheard the lady holding the pot say that was food for the dog. It was scraps and everything left over from the day. The guy indicated he didn't care and would eat it anyway. She said no she could not, that it might harm him. She did however find him some bread, so he would have something to eat.

How many times do we complain about our food? We talk about the bad taste or the fact it is not prepared just right. Here was a man willing to eat what was basically dog food, he only wanted food....no matter what it was , tasted , or smelled like.

The humbling fact is that many of us are just one paycheck, or lenghty sickness away from being in the same state as this guy. Did anyone else think of the scripture ".....for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink......" This was a true example of when Jesus said, "whatever you do for the least of these, you do for me".

Haven't I Seen You Before?

Today was De' Ja Vous. When we went to Table Mountain today we spotted several people we had seen on our flight over here. Later when we went to Water Front, we spotted the same four people again. They were part of the Miami team. They are here for working with VBS at a church near where we are working.

We had an interesting conversation with two of the guys. They really are excited about their work. It was very interesting that the two places we would choose to visit today were the exact same locations Team Miami were at also and at the exact same time.

I'm interested to see what will come out of us and this team when we meet up again. It's kinda cool to be seeing familar faces.

Beautiful View

I'm fortunate enough to be in the room with the ocean view, cool. Speaking of cool, did I mention there is no heat ?? Actually, we have a small space heater in our room and it did an ok job. The weather should be rather nice , highs in 50's-60's. I did hear there was no hot water this morning though. I took my shower last night...smart move LOL

It's Friday morning and almost time for breakfast, then we will split into several sub-teams and look at our projects ans objectives for the week.....then we will play tourist in the afternoon. Looks as if we get all the "fun" things out of the way first.

I'm adding a photo of the view from my room as soon as I get a free moment, just so you know how we are roughing it HAHAHAHAHA

Live From Cape Town

Well, we are here. Flights went well, except for the HORRIBLE food!!! Delta Airlines has the worse food ever. I set with Shane on the way across the pond and we helped the pilot fly through some rough weather. Ok, so we were using our U-Shaped pillows as controls, however we were doing almost as well as the pilot !!!

We had a short meeting after we arrived, went through unpacking supplies, and had dinner. I met a girl from Michigan named Brenda at dinner. She is working with Living Hope doing fund raising for US organizations. Very interesting conversation.

We also had a devotion after we ate. Things have been busy already, so we are definitely getting tired.

More to come later......

It's Almost Time

Sunday evening we met as a team to finish packing supplies for our trip on Thursday. John Thomas, director and founder of Living Hope, stopped by to brief us on some political changes that had taken place earlier in the day in South Africa. He also informed us to dress and pack warm, saying this has been the coldest winter on record in Cape Town. So much for Global Warming LOL

I think the high when we arrive on Friday is supposed to be a balmy 50, oh did I mention that homes have no heat there? YIKES!!!

I'll be updating on the trip as often as time permits. I have a few meetings I have to squeeze in between our regular duties, however I will make updates. Hopefully, I will have time to add a few photos as well.

We depart Thursday morning around 11:20am and arrive at 3:55pm Friday in Cape Town. They are seven hours ahead of us. I can't wait for that long flight WoooHooooo yeah riiiiight!!!

You Make The Call

There was an advertisement during football games a few years ago, titled, "you make the call". Basically, you were shown a play and asked if it was illegal, if not what penalty would be called. This blog will be a variation of that theme.

During the 2001 NFL season, Carolina was suffering through a 1-15 year.
A guy in section 552, decided the crowd could make a difference and tried to fire everyone up when the opposing team reached third down. Hence the tee shirt on this blog.

Just a little side note: When an offense reaches third down, normally one of two things will occur. 1) They make enough yardage and reach a first down and continue the drive or 2) The defense holds them and they are forced to punt (give up the ball and end the drive).

We face the same situation on our life journey. When we reach our "third down" will we be able to continue the drive and eventually reach the end zone to score or will the defense hold and thus we blow another scoring opportunity?

Sometimes when we are faced with those 1-15 seasons and every down seems like third down, an amazing thing can happen. Instead of feeling sorry for ourselves, we look deep down inside and realize character is being formed.

As a side note: just two short seasons after that 1-15 season the Carolina Panthers went on to play against New England in the most exciting SuperBowl ever!

Life will have challenges (third downs) , sometimes we will reach the marker and make a first down, sometimes even a touchdown. Other times we will fail and have to punt away the ball. Just remember a football game is played over a course of 4 quarters and it's not over until the time on the clock has expired in the fourth quarter. Life is also played out over a course of time. So, just because we don't reach the goal on the first offensive drive, does not mean the game is over.

The Cost Is Still The Same

This past Thursday during our meeting of Ironmen, I made an offhand comment about an adventure after the upcoming South Africa trip. One of the guys stated he would rather watch shark diving on Discovery or possibly from the boat. I said it doesn't matter if you swim with the sharks or just stay on the boat, it still costs the same.

Now this can have two totally different meanings.
1) If you venture into the world and are involved in only seeking the pleasures of the world, you are just as guilty to long to be there as if you actually jump in and participate.

2) When living the life of a Christ follower you pay the same price whether you stay on the boat ( sit on the pews and be a Sunday Christian and watch the others do the work) or if you jump into the water with the sharks ( go out to a hurting and dying world and make a difference). In other words , you will face the same opposition and ridicule......so why not join in the adventure?

The old saying goes; "If you are going to walk on water, you have to get out of the boat".....they leave out the part about the ocean being filled with sharks LOL The sharks, sting rays, or other unknowns are nothing to fear as long as we keep our eyes on the one that calls us out of the boat (Jesus). Peter found out the hard way what happens once you look at the surroundings and not the master. WAIT, before you jump on Peter for losing faith, how many of the others actually got out of the boat? Don't forget, Peter actually DID walk on water....only a few steps, but he did what the others were afraid to attempt.
